121909 - International Day of Peace
International Day of Peace - Friday, 21 September 2012

"The International Day of Peace shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples."
(UN General Assembly Resolution 36/67 of 30 November 1981)

Every year on 21 September, millions of people around the globe come together to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Since its inception, "Peace Day" has provided the opportunity for people everywhere to unite in the common goal of building a peaceful world. UNOG, based in Geneva, the 'city of peace', provides an ideal platform to bring together different stakeholders to not only commemorate the day, but to advance these broader goals.

As part of these efforts, UNOG marked the day with two special events:

  • International Day of Peace: Commemorative event and High-level Panel

Organized by the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica, and in collaboration with a large coalition of NGOs, the commemorative event featured a video message by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, remarks by UNOG Director-General Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and a performance by the UN music club. The commemoration was followed by a panel discussion of eminent personalities on "The Right to Peace".

  • Seminar on "Inclusiveness at the heart of peacebuilding: Limits and opportunities"

This event featured a high-level exchange on 'inclusiveness' in peacebuilding as the key to sustainable peace. It was organized by UNOG, Interpeace and the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform and built on the growing momentum around the need for inclusive peacebuilding, a central theme in the forthcoming 2012 Secretary-General's Report on peacebuilding.
