Director-General Addresses Plenary Session of Conference on Disarmament

The Director-General addressed the plenary session of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) and shared his impressions of the General Assembly meeting held on the subject of the CD from 27-29 July 2011. In his remarks, he highlighted the statement of the Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, which stressed the urgency of finding a solution to the current deadlock in the CD. The Director-General also noted that in order for the CD to be reformed and resume its leading role as a multilateral disarmament forum, it is necessary to look at its procedures, membership and its agenda, and emphasized that its authority and record should not be compromised. He pointed out the CD maintains its immense value and remains irreplaceable. The Director-General also stressed that the future of the CD is in the hands of its member countries.
